Just a quick post to let you know how things have been progressing in the last month or so...
After much too-ing and fro-ing with the manufacturer, we've just been sent the new finalised geolocator model we'll be deploying this spring on rollers in Portugal and Cyprus. It's amazing that such relatively complicated pieces of kit can be made so small (ours come in at under 3g, which is nothing to a roller).
My colleague Tom has also sorted out our PIT tag and radio-frequency recorder equipment. It's all very Heath Robinson; Tom and I will be spending a significant chunk of this week trying to manufacture coloured leg rings incorporating the tags, using home-made moulds and a veritable cornucopia of solvents and adhesives.
Only seven weeks to the start of this year's field season...

Well here goes...
Hi everyone and welcome to my blog!
I'm hoping to keep it updated over the course of the next three (or so) years whilst I carry out research for my PhD at the University of East Anglia. As you may have already gathered, the star of the show is the European roller (which hopefully goes some way to explaining the name of the blog too).
If you're interested in finding out a little bit more about the roller, and about my research in general, then please have a flick through the tabs at the top of the blog. I'm currently in the process of organising my fieldwork season for this year, including the refinement of my research questions and methods, and hope to keep you posted as the year progresses. I'm not exactly a technophile though, so you'll have to excuse the odd blog-related slip-up along the way...
Do feel free to contact me if you'd like to know more about my work or the other research being undertaken within the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Conservation (CEEC) here at UEA too.
